De-programming the Ego

The ego. What is it and why is it programmed? Better yet, why must we de-program it? I will present details, but before I do that, I want to answer the question of why we must de-program it. The short answer is anyone who is serious about spirituality must de-program their ego.

The ego is the conditioning of our earthly self, and while I am not against our earthly selves, it will hold us back from evolving spiritually, denying us our true self in the process. Many claim you cannot eat your cake and have it too, but they are wrong. We can realize our true self while still enjoying the earthly self which lives within the illusion of our 3-dimensional reality.

Interested how? Most people are not and blindly travel through the illusion, some with great success while others experience misery, pain, and suffering. This is why Buddha taught us the suffering we experience is created by our own mind–the ego. So, when you are raging at the world and blaming everyone and everything for your suffering, look in the mirror if you want to truly discover the real culprit.

This is not an easy concept for most people to wrap their egos around, and let’s be honest, the ego doesn’t want you to figure this out, so you are at a huge disadvantage when trying to understand and implement this knowledge into your daily existence. This is why so much suffering still persists in our world. Everyone’s ego is running their lives and their emotional rollercoasters.

So, what is the ego? Simply put, it is the you that you believe you are. It begins at birth, and through the development of your physical body, life experiences, education, and traumas, the ego is forged. It is programmed (conditioned) by the very world we live in. And let’s be honest, it is a fabulous world, but maybe only if you see it from outside your ego.

Programming begins with your family. They teach you the basics of being a “normal” human in their society and culture. You adopt their behaviors, their beliefs, and their ideology, becoming a younger version of themselves. But their influence, though very strong, can be modified by external experiences and influences outside their protective world. This is why many parents desperately try to shelter their children from those outside influences.

Our ego is the product of our sensorial experiences and the dogmatic indoctrination through standardized religion, education, and our country’s cultures. It cannot be stopped, nor should it be. This is the reason we incarnated back on this world, to experience life through our senses. But the dogmatic programming, well…that may or may not be good for us spiritually.

Most societies indoctrinate their people with basic rules about how to treat others and ourselves. We cling to those ethics since we must adhere to them as a requirement to play our part in the collective, which we most generally want to be a part of. Although there are many variations of these rules around the world, they are typically all good. So where is the problem?

The problem is that the ego grows and learns through its common senses: touch, sight, hearing, taste, and smells. While that may feel like it is not a problem, it is programming itself to believe all things in its reality are products of external stimuli only. Therefore, any distress, emotional reactions, or poor states of mind must also be a product of external stimuli.

  • A dog bites me, so I cry in pain and suffer.
  • A fire burns my house, so I am angry, sad, and despairing.
  • My significant other leaves me for another person, so I am sad and angry.
  • I am laid off from work and can no longer support my family, so I feel like a failure.
  • I lose someone dear to me when they die, and I am left lonely.

All of these are examples of suffering in our modern world. But does suffering have to be our default state? The answer is no. Part of our spiritual evolution is the understanding that suffering is a learning opportunity for us to evolve spiritually. Once we discover who we truly are and the nature of the Universe, then this learning takes on a whole new meaning.

So, what is the net effect of all this? The ego is the cause of our suffering because it is the reaction of the ego to the external stimuli which causes our emotional reactions and negative thoughts. This leads to the suffering and eventually a poor life state. Now, if you are thinking let’s get rid of emotions and the problem is solved, then Spock, you are missing the point of all this.

We want the emotional reactions, for that is the experience we crave when we reincarnate back into this physical plane of reality. If we didn’t want those experiences, we would not reincarnate over and over again. Boring!

What I am saying is we want these emotional reactions to the external stimuli of life, but we need not suffer from them. Suffering is unnecessary and leads us down paths we don’t want to travel: war, suicide, murder, violence, instability, anxiety, doubt, and ultimately, the rejection of all things not part of the physical reality.

We are blinded by the ego to the reality of our ethereal selves and all the richness of our Universe across all planes of existence. This is what we call the illusion, and that is the crime we wish to stop. All of it falls directly at the feet of our ego.

  • Don’t believe in a Universal Intelligence? Ego.
  • Don’t believe there is anything but what we can see, touch, taste, smell, and hear? Ego.
  • Believe we are the only intelligence in the Universe? Ego.
  • Believe there is no Soul, and that our physical bodies are all we are? Ego.
  • Believe you cannot manifest your own reality and must suffer all that comes your way without recourse? Ego.
  • Constantly follow authority, even when they lead you down a dark path? Ego.
  • Insist that enlightenment is just the physical knowledge we discovered? Ego.
  • Don’t believe in a diverse Universe filled with incredible life? Ego.
  • Don’t believe in our Divine nature? Ego.
  • Don’t believe you can do anything about your life? Ego.

All of our suffering and delusions are products of the ego’s programming or conditioning. It manifests all types of psychological issues and creates the problems we see people struggle with around the world. So, what are we to do?

We de-program our egos! It is a process that starts by looking beyond the ego’s lies to the reality that is beyond our physical senses. That is difficult when all you know is what your ego has taught you. There is much more beyond the physical plane, and once you begin to reach for it, you will start down the path of your spiritual evolution. That evolution when you outgrow your ego and mature into the sentient, spiritual, and enlightened being you are.

For thousands of years, this journey was typically a path of monastic life or as a dedicated disciple of a yogi who purposely selected you for your spiritual curiosity and maturity. Banish these thoughts, that is no longer true at the end of this current age and the beginning of the next age of enlightenment.

We are on the brink of an evolutionary shift into a new age where all veils will fall away from humanity’s eyes, revealing the true reality rather than the false reality the ego tells us is real. You, me, everyone can enjoy this newfound revelation, but first we must de-program our egos to free us from its delusional lies.

Kriya Serpent Yoga is but one of many yogic techniques which can be used on this spiritual journey to de-program your ego and show you the reality that remains hidden, yet a very real part of your reality. You are only living in a very small portion of the reality that surrounds you, and your ego is the warden of this prison.
